Are you brave enough to tackle … the stair challenge?
If you can walk very fast up three or four flights of stairs without stopping in under a minute, you have good functional capacity. If not, it’s a good indication that you need more exercise. In other words, being physically fit means you are likely to live longer than those who are not.
It’s not surprising news that being fit is aligned with living longer, and in addition to keeping body weight down, being physically fit also has many other benefits, including:
- Having a positive effect of blood pressure and lipids
- Reducing inflammation
- Improving the body’s immune response to tumors
But how much exercise is enough?
On a weekly basis we should be aiming for 150 minutes (3½ hours) of moderate exercise. That works out at approximately 30 minutes every day for 6 days of the week.
However, if you do more vigorous exercise you only need do 75 minutes (1¼ hours) a week, plus some strength training which, you can do on the stairs!
Even if you work out, are you willing to tackle the stair challenge?
