We can always think of creative ways to get out of something, especial if it’s something we don’t want to do. Think of all the excuses you came up with in your youth for not handing in homework: the dog ate it, aliens, etc.
And when it comes to getting out of exercising the list of excuses is as creative as they come.
We’ve compiled another 5 of the best excuses for not exercising that we’ve heard. Have you used any of these?
"Exercising makes me hungry"
Let's be honest, hunger after exercise is natural. After a good sweat session you're likely to have burnt a lot of calories, and the body fuels and repairs itself with food.
BUT, binging after a workout is not going to help with your long-term health goals.
Nine times out of ten your brain interprets thirst as hunger and what you think is hunger is actually your brain telling you that you need water, especially if you've sweated a lot during you gym session.
There are though ways to avoid the post-workout cravings:
- Eat a piece of fruit before exercising
- keep hydrated before, during and after your workout
- put a healthy, nutritious post-workout snack in your bag before you go the gym
- plan and prepare post-workout meals in advance
- don't go to the gym hungry
“I ran out of my pre-post workout supplement”
This isn’t even an excuse.
There are apps for everything these, including reminder apps. SO running out of supplements is never an excuse.
Next.
“I’m too fat to work out”
When we feel uncomfortable or self-conscious, the easiest thing to do is to avoid doing things that put us in the public eye.
If you're self-conscious about your weight, start small but start with something.
There are some simple solutions to help you begin your fitness journey:
- start by just going walking. Walking with friends is a great way to exercise
- do some simple exercises in the privacy of your own home
- you don't have to squeeze into skimpy workout clothes, wear what you feel comfortable with
“I’m too old”
Stop, just stop using age as an excuse.
Yes, the type of exercise you do may change as you get older, but not exercising and using age as an excuse could partly be due to laziness and also a loss of confidence in yourself and your abilities.
Gordon, founder of Combat Arts, has noticed, especially in men the unpopular side of 40 that they seem to lose themselves somehow, lose their way and to a certain extent their mojo.
But here's the good news. Nothing in life is written in stone. Nowhere does it say that you are too old to exercise. In fact, you are never too old to do anything you want.
And the best thing is, exercise make you feel and look younger.
Now isn't that motivation enough for you to grab your workout gear?
“I don’t want to embarrass myself”
Even the great masters were once a learner.
Nobody, especially when it comes to exercising, wants to looks like a newbie, or feel flustered trying to figure out just exactly how the weight training machines work.
But the more you practice, the easier it will get.
Why not take advantage of any FREE services that gyms or personal trainers offer to help you get the best out of your workout.
These could be anything from learning how to use the machines, creating a personalised workout or 1-2-1 introductory sessions for you to see if that type of exercise is for you.
